Youth baseball tournament programming is the core attraction of the unbelievable Ripken Experience Baseball Complex in Myrtle Beach, S.C. A major design focus of this project was teaching participants the history of baseball while preserving as much of the natural lay of the land as possible. By designing each field’s dimensions after a historical baseball field, children will have the opportunity to learn the significance of that field through information posted at each location. An entry way drop off sport was design in the mold of a baseball field with a sculptured infield garden and a baseball “Wall of History,” To greet participants and spectators as they arrive. By creatively laying out SWM locations and walking the ground to mark individual trees, Ripken Management & Design has been able to provide each of these fields with their own unique backdrop and scenery. The construction phase of the project included large amounts of wetlands as well as very wet soil conditions which are common to the Myrtle Beach area. SWM facilities were strategically placed to form canals and ponds to not only help with water issues, but also to create the training island and add an additional feeling of “cool,” to spectators and players during hot summer days. The main building, located at the entry point to the complex, holds administrative offices, information booths, registration and check-in headquarters, a café, snack stands, restrooms, and merchandise store. A deck was design to surround the building, where spectators can gather to eat and have a view of both championship fields.
